CURRICULUM
South Korean baritone Daniel Gwon has built a promising career in both opera and concert performance. He began his vocal studies at the Korea National University of Arts, where he earned his bachelor’s degree, and continued with a master’s at the Detmold University of Music. He finished his master’s exam and is studying for his Konzertexamen. During his studies, he took on roles such as Malatesta in Don Pasquale and Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro.
In the autumn 2023 he joined the opera studio at Landestheater Detmold, where his roles have included Ping Turandot, Nathanael Les contes d’Hoffmann and Motorcycle Cop/ Prison Guard 1/ Inmate in Jake Heggie‘s Dead Man Walking. In 2021 he sang Conte Le nozze di Figaro and in 2022 Marcello La Bohème at Landestheater Detmold. He sang Beethoven‘s Symphony No. 9 and Mendelssohn‘s Paulus as soloist at the concert. In 2023 he sang alongside Lawrence Brownlee in a gala concert at the Müpa Budapest and his debut in 2024 at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam.
Gwon is also an award-winning singer, with recent awards including First Prize and Special Prize at the Concorso Lirico Internazionale Iris Adami Corradetti in 2024, a Special Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 2023, First Prize at the Salvatore Licitra Competition in Milan in 2022, and First Prize at the Competizione dell’ Opera in 2022. Additionally, he received numerous awards in various competitions.
He gained stage experience at the Opera Studio and then In the 2024/25 season, he will be freelancing and will make his debut as Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Landestheater Coburg and as Motorrad Walker in Dead Man Walking at the Landestheater Detmold.
